Comment: No It's not the same. Basic Math will tell you over time $3 times X hrs will always be greater than $0.00 times 0 hrs. How do Illegal immigrants work for $3 a hr. and support household with 10 to 20 living in it. The answer is they all work. Most Americans are lazy they rather not work then get paid less than min. wage. We have failed our selves by limiting the work for Americans based on wages.

Comment: No, it's rare for a minimum wage worker to be the ONLY income earner with a family of children. To those who are, my question is this--why are you having children? Get a better job before you decide to have children. I do think people of low income levels should receive refundable tax credits, like the earned income tax credit. But do not mandate that employers pay a certain level, because if someone's productivity is below that, he will be hard-pressed to find work.

Comment: It is very common for minimum wage workers to be supporting a family; it's why we have child tax credits to bump up their income. I do not think that most minimum wage workers are teenagers. A lot of teenagers are doing apprenticeship, which are less than minimum wage.

Comment: That's a nice fantasy, but in reality a higher minimum wage will just cause low skilled workers to become unemployed. If someone's productivity is only $6/hr, no one is going to keep him employed at $7.25/hr. Young people need the low-paying entry level jobs in order to gain experience and get better pay in the future. Also, it's very rare for a minimum wage worker to be supporting a family. Most minimum wage workers are teenagers, and most working parents earn well above minimum wage.

Comment: Of course, back before there were minimum wages and other labor laws, like in the 1890's, there basically was no middle class, only a whole lot of very poor workers and a few very wealthy people at the top. Jack London gave an excellent portrait of life back then in his book The Iron Heel.

Comment: I was trying to show you how having minimum wage firefighters is not a tragedy, since there are already so many volunteers to begin with. Infrastructure that is "necessary" will provide a return-on-investment. Infrastructure that is wasteful will not provide a return-on-investment. Highways provide a return-on-investment, so most of them are worth the money. Rapid rail does not provide a return-on-investment in North America, so it is a waste of taxpayer money.
